Putting a Face to Captivity in War in the Ancient Roman World
February 3, 2021, 10:00 am to 10:00 am

Thousands of people were trafficked as a result of Rome’s conquest of the Mediterranean (c. 300 BCE - 100 CE). These individuals are mostly recorded in ancient sources in numerical form alone—as tallies of prisoners taken after the sack of a city or the coin generated from their sale on the slave market. In this talk I will present my efforts to uncover the personal histories of the people taken as captives and the ways in which these histories shaped their experience of captivity.
